As you can see it is quite lengthy.  It’s not even the largest of sections either.

The exact numbers for each section…

Head: 38
Neck: 49
Shoulders: 34
Cloak: 44
Chest: 46
Wrist: 27
Main Hand: 44
Off Hand: 22
Staves: 26
Wand: 25
Gloves: 41
Belt: 39
Legs: 40
Boots: 30
Ring: 70

That’s 545 item listings on one page.  It’s all text but thats a lot of links as well.

When I go to look for gear lists for my newly ding’d 80 alts a lot of them assume you are only a tier behind.  That frustrates me because I don’t know what I’m looking for in terms of starting gear, just a ‘wing’ it type of thing.  Having something more comprehensive is what I look for.  That’s why I am leaning towards a comprehensive list.

On the flipside you are talking about 545 items loading on one page (granted it is all text) as well as a minimum of 545 different links (I’m not sure if that really slows down the page load or not).

What do you all think?  Should I go comprehensive or nix a lot of it?  Where should I start the cut off… anything below Ulduar 10 or ToC 10?  Y’alls input is greatly appreciated and will help this go a lot easier.

EDIT:  Thanks for the replies all, it is much appreciated.  I’ll have the list ready to go by New Years day (I’m off work Thursday).  I’m going to list everything you can get that is iLevel 232 and higher.  That iLevel is where t9 10man starts and is what is found in the new ICC5 man heroics.  The discipline gear list will use Bobturkey’s new stat weights with some modifications (noted in the post).

I would say the T9 Conquest should be the low end gear on the list, being as how easy it is to get these days.

What scale are you using for stat itemization?

  2. Tagra says:

I’d go comprehensive, but break it up. Heroics/crafted/badge gear under a “starting out” section, ToC/ICC gear under a raid section.

I don’t know about Ulduar… and Naxx definitely seems like a waste of space to include. With the 10 man ToC 232 sets available with 2 days of work doing random dungeons, I’d just leave that as a recommended start point. If they stumble into an older raid and find something to plug a hole with, that’s cool, but there’s other easier options to recommend.

I’d probably also make a “quick list” of the top rated items (first place, second place… I guess when applicable, first and second for normal and heroic seperately since not everyone can make it to heroic) for each slot too, for efficiency. That’s what I’ve been doing with my alts using Rawr, so I have a quick reference of what to shoot for my non-raid offspecs without having to waste a lot of time researching what the fuck I’m supposed to be doing with that spec. It’s nice to have a quick reference when something drops and I can’t just shift-compare because I’m wearing a different set of gear and everyone is already clicking disenchant and pulling the next one.

  3. Break it into ‘new 80s’ list and BIS list?

Funny thing is any reader can get the information easily by following the LootRank/GuildOx or similar link, plus they can customise it. But people still want loot lists…

    Gobble gobble.

@Heelir: I’m using Bob’s stat weights with some modification (sorry Bob I didn’t mention that in this but you are credited in the final gear list that I’ll be posting).

@Tagra: Yea, that sounds good. Anything preToC cut is probably the way to go.

@Bob: Yea some peeps just aren’t a fan of those sites plus its easier to look at a list on someones blog than to scroll through Lootrank imo. Personally I’ve always used a spreadsheet that I can easily modify and resort but when I put it up on the blog it does make it easier for me to read / scan.

  5. Norhia says:

How about instead of redoing the list for each new tier of content that comes out, you leave the old list as it is, and then make a NEW list with what are the current BIS choices. That way, if they are just starting out in content, they can look at the list for when Naxx was out and there was a heroics blend in there. If they get pugged into an Ony run and don’t know if they should replace their hat, they can just go to the gear rankings for content from that patch. If an item from an earlier raid still has good itemization for the slot, it should still appear on the list for that patches updated BiS gear list. If you have funds for craftables, you should always check the rankings of craftable items from the latest patch releasing raiding content and see if the items are within your budget and worth your time.

Because a 545 item list will make my eyes bleed, and if you keep on remaking the list every time new content comes out in the interest of helping people gear up their raiders, it will make your brain bleed too.

Leave it and blaze boldly forward!! ToC didn’t have any gear check bosses, and so far Icecrown hasn’t been particularly harder than ToC. The itmization guide for Ulduar is enough of a step for people to be ready to head into both ToC and Icecrown as it stands.
